Mercury assumed a key role in identifying the requirements for a township and in coordinating the necessary documentation. Lovely designed the avatar that was placed in the public square in front of the UWF guild house in recognition of the newly formed township. What this means to UWF members and others living in the township is that there are many public buildings offering free services within the rough outlines of the township which continues to grow. These include a town hall, libraries, museums, cathedrals, taverns, a feed and seed, a decorating center, an instrument center and crafting areas. We hope one day to be able to add a bank and stable to the township. UWF is one of a very few select guilds that have the distinction of hosting a township. It should also be mentioned that UWF communities are concentrated and thriving in other areas of the shard.

Beloved emissary and revered guildmate Ivory passed away. She was a favorite of many members, and is sorely missed.
Thanks to the amazing help of EM Roenick, the UWF Memorial Gardens were created in the Trinsic Swamp Cemetery. This area now bears headstones devoted to those of our members who have passed away all too soon.
The UWF Guild House, which was placed on 7/12/2000, was honored by being inducted into the UO Historical Society.

Lion, who is notorious for leaving us behind and moving on with his life, returned on this date. We don't expect him to stay more than a week.
Top-down leadership reassignment and clarification.
King's Queen, being the fiercely loyal and loveable guildmate that he was, retired on this day by inviting the entire guild to his house and giving away his many treasures to any and all.
UWF christened the all-new Emissary Hall, showcasing our current leadership and some notable names from our past.
Beloved knight and revered guildmate Maverick passed away. Maverick was an amazing friend and guildmate, and always knew how to help his guildmates in just the right ways.

MadMartyr won our Member of the Year Award, which is a lifetime achievement award open to all members, and decided by guildmates. The person who wins this award has gone above and beyond the call of duty, and is not eligible for nomination again.
In order to bring UWF's forums in line with a more modern paradigm for usage and interface, MadMartyr migrated our forums to a new forums software.

A statue of King's Queen is commissioned for the UWF museum in honor of all of his service to the guild. It is unveiled at an end-of-summer promotion ceremony on the UWF castle roof.
A paragon of awesomeness, Ozz, retired from UO. During his time in UO he amassed more than 30 homes, enough that we declared that he had his own town spread throughout the shard.
Belladonna won our Member of the Year Award, which is a lifetime achievement award open to all members, and decided by guildmates. The person who wins this award has gone above and beyond the call of duty, and is not eligible for nomination again.
Following this date, decoration of the Guild House and Banquet hall was taken over by Belladonna and Makeila.
Makeila won our Member of the Year Award, which is a lifetime achievement award open to all members, and decided by guildmates. The person who wins this award has gone above and beyond the call of duty, and is not eligible for nomination again.
The first annual UWF Halloween Maze was created largely by Makeila, with the help of many others in terms of decorations and linked homes. This maze generally attracts players from many other shards. Continued in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
The Emissary Emeritus rank was instituted on this date as a means of showing appreciation to past Emissaries for their service.
There are many amazing buildings in the UWF Township, but none more amazing than William’s Cathedral which hosted the 2010 UWF Lords and Ladies Banquet. It was erected 9/24/10 and led to William receiving the UWF Township Architect Award at the 2010 banquet. It went IDOC and fell in early September 2012. MadMartyr claimed the plot and rebuilt the cathedral almost two years after it was initially built.
Ivory opened a UWF Aviary with birds named after UWF members on this date and FooFighter opened “The Trinsic Gate Tavern” on 9/6/12. MadMartyr's Funeral Home and Bank also opened around this time.
MM/Jingle aided by Petkiller acquired this building adjacent to the UWF guild house by a bit of sleight of hand (although nobody was ripped off). The tale is a bit reminiscent of Br’er Rabbit’s briar patch.
MadMartyr developed a much improved replacement of the defunct UO Automap that had been offered to UWF members to test beginning in November 2008 and on this date it was officially approved for use by EA/Mythic.
Fallon Valor and MadMartyr completed renovating the UWF website. Whereas they maintain it, Tully served as Moderator of the new site until Mercury assumed the role on 7/6/12.
Tzadkiel won our Member of the Year Award, which is a lifetime achievement award open to all members, and decided by guildmates. The person who wins this award has gone above and beyond the call of duty, and is not eligible for nomination again.
“Pathfinder Will” helped familiarize guildmates with tours into Stygian Abyss from 11/23/11 – 11/25/11.
Ivy had been encased in a bottle by a witch over an argument over ownership of her house. There were a few minor internal battles within UWF by friends of the witch and those that wanted to free Ivy. The situation escalated when “DUWF” (once again created to serve as the evil guild) stole Ivy’s bottle. The subsequent battle between UWF and DUWF resulted in victory for UWF and freedom for Ivy.
UWF was the featured guild in the parade that opened this event. Similar to the Queen Dawn escort, UWF members were in guild attire and noteworthy by appearance and demeanor.
Makeila and Rain suggested that new member kits be provided to new members of UWF that were also new or returning to the game to ensure they were equipped with the essentials. Tzadkiel enlisted the help of Martia and numerous crafters and benefactors to fill small chests with LRC armor, rune books, enhanced bandages, potions, bags of sending, etc. Eventually two types of kits or chests were created – kits for new players and less extensive kits for new members that were not new to UO and were better equipped.
Initial intent was to provide a special hunt-related activity that might be more easily attended by those in different time zones. Advance setup and planning allows several “T” hunts to be pursued during a single hunt. It is a unique opportunity for fellowship interrupted by brief intense periods of chaos. It quickly became and remains a favorite guild activity.
Heavyweight division winner was Z’s “Z,” middleweight division winner was Rain’s “PinkKritter,” and lightweight division winner was Z’s “Greenie.”
Tzadkiel, Rain, Emily and Lady Lovely led a hunt group that conquered all six peerless champs during a single guild hunt. This feat was repeated by a hunt group led by Tzadkiel and Rain on 4/15/12.
This was first awarded at an annual UWF Lords and Ladies Banquet. Intent of the position is to assist emissaries and to provide experience that could lead to eventual promotion to Emissary.
The second iteration of these training, educational and mentoring sessions was led by Miyamoto Musashi.
The policy regarding Fel Champs since November 2006 had been that UWF did not pursue Fel champs as a guild due to the legacy of the UWF and DFA conflict. Individuals could pursue them but were not to mention them in guild chat. However, the policy changed due to the growth of UWF and the multitude that wished to participate in Fel Champs. From this point on, members of UWF could offer participation in Fel Champs to the guild at large using guild chat, and participate as a UWF team similar to participation in Peerless Champs. The communication tool of choice during Fel Champs is the TeamSpeak server although occasional comments in guild chat regarding Fel Champs no longer create excitement.
Power scrolls (primarily 110s) had been donated to the guild by those that participated in Fel Champs for some time and haphazardly distributed by Dragging Canoe. Ivy assumed stewardship of these scrolls on this date, organized them in the UWF Library in front of the guild house and worked out a process for requesting and distributing them.
Mercury created the scenario and organized the event whereby a guild called “DUWF” kidnapped the UWF Guild Master. The event took place over several days in order to find clues and track DUWF to their stronghold. It ended with a heroic battle between UWF and “DUWF” that freed Dragging Canoe.
Beloved member Shadowmaker passed away. Shadowmaker was a wonderful contributor and is greatly missed.
The two UWF 2010 Township Entrepreneurs (Tully and Oz) added two unique buildings and concepts to the Township – Tully’s Feed and Seed on 5/24/10 and Oz’s UWF Township Vendor Mall on 10/4/2010.
Organized by Ashe who was so brutal in protecting his GM in Doom that at least one person left after multiple deaths and was never heard from again.
This was a combination recruiting and crafting event intended to introduce the UWF Township. Free armor was crafted for attendees and other crafting items such as rune books were distributed. There was also a UWF Open House held on 2/27/11.
They continued the tradition in 2011 and 2012.
The former Guild Master obtained access to an emissary account, reguilded his handful of supporters and booted nearly the entire guild membership. A few emissaries and members that discovered the coup attempt stayed home from work or left work and thwarted it. They ran around the entire shard seeking the culprits, hunting them down, killing them, and booting them. It is humorous now to remember how one member chased two of the culprits into the talons and teeth of another member’s greater dragon in Luna. Most members had no idea what had happened when they logged in and found they were no longer in UWF. However, they trusted that something was wrong and lined up outside the guild house as emissaries explained what had happened and reinstated them. One hundred and fifty characters were reinstated that same night and within three days UWF was once again the largest guild in UO. Those involved in the coup attempt formed a guild called “True United We Fight (TUWF)” and took up occupancy in a house adjacent to the UWF guild house.
A player killer (PK) ambush disrupted the weekly UWF guild meeting which was the first indication of a planned coup attempt. Members present still gleefully remember this as the most exciting guild meeting in the history of UWF. The former Guild Master and his handful of supporters were summarily booted.
This event may have marked the realization and assumption of UWF’s leadership role on the Atlantic shard. UWF was one of three guilds that escorted Queen Dawn to meet the Gargoyle Queen Zhah in Britain. The stately UWF escort contingent, attired in guild colors, dwarfed the other escort parties. The UWF escort contingent also stood out from the crowd by their solemn demeanor and support of Queen Dawn amid a large crowd of hecklers and unruly children.
This tournament was conducted in a ruined castle outside New Haven. First place winners were Omega (owned by Ivory), Unidentified Flying Object (Emily) and Bridge Burner (Aldora). Second place winners were Killer (Petkiller) and Kas Vas Flam (Alexander).
Fallon Valor was the first leader of the UWF Orientation Wing. He solicited feedback regarding topics and recruited veteran experts to lead the weekly sessions held at Mercury’s Comedy Club. The intent of the Orientation Wing was to introduce people new to UWF to various aspects of UWF and to introduce both new players and veterans to crafting and other aspects of UO with which they were not familiar.
Vortex and Judge Judy led a hunt group that first defeated all five peerless bosses during a single hunt period. This was repeated by a Vortex and Judge Judy led hunt group on 6/8/2009.
This event was the brainchild of Ashe and Lion. It was organized by Lion and held in Doom. Intent was to give those in a player versus monster (PvM) centered guild an opportunity to participate in a player versus player (PvP) event without the danger of losing anything but karma. Dragging Canoe, protected by a small group of emissaries, was the target. Prize money was awarded each time one of Dragging Canoe’s protectors was killed and to the individual that killed Dragging Canoe. The latter got if not the last laugh at least a big laugh when he led a dozen pursuers into the bone room and cast invisible on himself. Suddenly the pursuers became the pursued as the entrance doors locked behind them and more than two score undead guardians spawned.
UWF had been the fifth largest guild on the Atlantic shard during the last half of 2007 and fourth by late 2008 but continued to grow and achieved the milestone of being the largest guild in UO on this date.
A former UWF emissary (Caldwin/Madstrider) suggested an annual banquet. It was first held on this date and has become an annual opportunity for formal leaders to celebrate and recognize the importance of guild members by gifting them during an awards/promotion banquet.
A former Guild Master and emissary hosted a TeamSpeak server in early 2007 but it caused more trouble than it was worth and never became an official guild communication tool. A current emissary, Ashe, first offered this to the guild on 8/16/2008. He hosted and maintained it until December 2011. Another current emissary, MadMartyr, currently hosts the guild TeamSpeak server and administers it with the assistance of other emissaries.
This designation was initially intended to recognize those that most assisted hunt leaders but was later expanded to recognize those that provided exceptional service to the guild membership.
This was the first of many such races. This one took place through the dungeon in Valor.
This first hunt was organized by Pink Dragoness. The next one on 3/23/2008 was hosted by Paps. Rain ensured it became and remained an annual event hosting it in April 2009 – April 2012.
The importance of the web site that Sunny/Balrog created cannot be overemphasized. Prior to completion of the web site, Dragging Canoe sent copies of guild meeting minutes to emissaries and hunt leaders by email, but email was a limited and awkward means of communication. Many people were involved in developing the objectives. There had been a web site prior to Dragging Canoe becoming Guild Master, but it was open to the public, allowed anonymous posts which tended to create needless drama, did not provide for private leadership discussions, was not employed as a training and educational tool, and was not widely used. The new web site was private, did not allow anonymous posts, allowed for private leadership discussions, and included separate forums on templates, dungeon and hunt information, news and scheduled activities, etc.
Greendragoon/Rocky retired as Guild Master and remained in UWF as an emissary. Dragging Canoe became Guild Master and purchased the guild castle. Some of what had been traditional throughout the history of UWF remains unchanged – guild hunts are still every evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST) except Tuesdays and weekly guild meetings continue to be held on Tuesdays. There have been lessons learned the hard way such as the need to continually recruit due to the large turnover in UO. Creating a culture based upon shared leadership emphasizing high fun and low drama didn’t happen overnight and wasn’t initially universally accepted. Many people not necessarily mentioned in these recorded key events have made significant contributions by their example and service to include a guild medic and an individual whose name was taken from his habit of giving away his fortune.
UWF was formed to meet the needs of new players and build a respectful, highly engaging community of like-minded players.
UWF is an adult guild with only the rules needed to protect fellowship, fair play, and the enjoyment of everyone under our banner.
Most problems begin with a warning; serious violations involving player killing, theft, or scams can result in immediate removal. If the concern involves a guildmate, contact an Emissary. If it involves an Emissary, contact the Guild Leader.
Respect the banner. Respect each other.
UWF’s leadership exists to help the guild succeed — not to stand above it. Members of leadership organize hunts, welcome recruits, answer questions, and keep the community moving forward.
